Feel Good Flow: Episode 19

Hi Friends,

We are counting down the single digit days to Saoirse’s birthday. She’s been planning a party since the ride home from Dollywood last month. She created her own invitation which was a handwritten flyer including an agenda, invite list, and menu. She used paper cut outs and stickers and I didn’t correct her backward letters S and G. The effect was what I would call, “adorable ransome note.”

Just a few months ago, her letter reversals seemed such a dire thing needing to be fixed. And then her kidneys kept failing and I realized what real worry was.

We had delivered the invitations weeks ago when the days stretched out looooong and it was the only errand she could manage. We did it together, her with excitement, me with trepidation.

At her age I had, what my teachers praised as, “perfect handwriting.” In dance, I had a “perfect point.” Perfect was my pursuit and it lasted decades too long.

At one point, my spiritual advisor told me that all our children choose us as parents in order to teach us what our soul needs to learn. One look at toddler Saoirse, in her ratty Elsa dress she wore for 2+ years, I realized she was teaching me about letting go. Delivering the slightly deranged invitations to families, and planning a decidedly un-instagram party is a huge lesson for me; the goal is not perfection (let it go), it’s to have fun.

And the theme is WHALES.

Quick Hits for the Week:

1) PLANNing

Have Drapes, Will Travel

On a fun note… I’m planning to be in New York at the end of June.

If anyone would like to book a color analysis with me, or wants to make it a party with a few friends, email me! I’m only able to take a few appointments and I really want to spread the joy of knowing your season. Discovering someone’s season with them is such a joyful process and I want to do this for you!

2) CHEERING

Veteran Lacrosse Mom
Last weekend we had our first spring lacrosse tournament which made me start to mentally prepare myself for the months ahead.

Our family has never been camping, but we have faced no indoor plumbing, no food or drinks for miles and looking for shelter in the sweltering heat of the turf for days on end. Sometimes I think we’d be better off on the Appalachian Trail than a Maryland sports complex. I put together a veteran survival guide of the kinds of things I’ve come to depend on-- click the button to check it out!

3) LISTENING

Middle of Nowhere

My mom urged me to include this album in the newsletter this week.

My mom and my musical tastes converge only with strong female vocalists and Kacey Musgraves certainly sits in the center of our venn diagram. Musgrave’s new album, Middle of Nowhere is filled with her expected clever lyrics and thoughtful storytelling. Thanks mom. My inner 16-year-old refuses to admit when you’re right, so you’re NOT WRONG.

4) WEARING

Mom Jeans

I pulled the trigger on these upcycled jeans from NY based Proche studio.

Vintage denim is re-pieced to create this unusual silhouette. They’re surprisingly flattering and so distinctive. Recommend 10/10.

5) READING

Poolside Reads

My neighborhood pool opens TODAY.

And I have a sweet stack of books to keep me company while I lay under the umbrella. My problem is I always need to TALK to someone about what I am reading. Who has finished Yesteryear??? Also, on my list is Mothers of Magic and Theo of Golden. A few of you have expressed interest in a book club, if you want in, reply and let me know!

Don’t worry, it will be an imperfect book club–come as you are.

Because that’s how we roll around here.

Homemade goody bags and all.

Shine on,

Maggie
